This moist spiced pear bread is a cozy fall tradition, made with ripe pears and warm spices. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ยฝ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ยฝ teaspoon baking powder
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ยฝ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ยผ teaspoon ground ginger
  • โ…› teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • ยฝ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ยพ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ยผ cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 ยฝ cups peeled and diced ripe pears (about 2 medium pears)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray. For extra insurance, line the pan with a strip of parchment paper, leaving a little overhang on the long sides.
  2. Prepare the pears. Peel, core, and dice your pears into small cubesโ€”about ยผ to ยฝ inch. Set them aside. If your pears are very ripe, toss them with a teaspoon of flour to prevent them from sinking.
  3. Whisk the dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.
  4. Cream the butter and sugar. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffyโ€”about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the eggs and vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Mix in the yogurt. Add the plain yogurt (or sour cream) and stir until just combined.
  7. Fold in the dry ingredients. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients in two additions, folding gently with a rubber spatula. Mix until just combinedโ€”a few streaks of flour are fine.
  8. Fold in the pears. Gently fold the diced pears into the batter.
  9. Pour into the pan. Transfer the batter to your prepared loaf pan. Spread it evenly with the spatula.
  10. Bake. Place the pan in the center of the oven and bake for 55-65 minutes. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs. If the top is browning too quickly, tent it loosely with aluminum foil.
  11. Cool. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Don’t overmix the batter. Use ripe but firm pears. Check your baking soda for freshness. Room temperature ingredients matter. Let the bread cool completely before slicing. Use parchment paper for easy removal.
