This chocolate cherry banana bread combines ripe bananas, tart cherries, and rich chocolate for an incredibly moist and flavorful loaf. It’s quick to make with simple ingredients and perfect for breakfast, snack, or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium ripe bananas (about 1 ½ cups mashed)
  • 1 cup frozen or fresh cherries, pitted and halved
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips (plus more for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray, then line with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving a few small chunks. Set aside.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until no lumps remain.
  4. To the bowl with the mashed bananas, add the melted butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, Greek yogurt (or sour cream), and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Use a spatula to fold together gently until just combined—do not overmix. A few lumps are fine.
  6. Gently fold in the halved cherries and chocolate chips, reserving about a tablespoon of chocolate chips for topping.
  7. Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips on top, along with a few extra cherry halves if desired.
  8. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, starting to check at 50 minutes. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs (not wet batter). If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes, then lift out using the parchment paper and transfer to the rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use very ripe bananas (spotty or black). Do not thaw frozen cherries before adding. Toss cherries in a tablespoon of flour to prevent sinking. Let the bread cool completely before slicing for clean cuts. The flavor improves after a day.
